Turning to Tutors, Instead of Schools

Tutoring the Frey children, along with an occasional neighbor or two, Ms. Mariano earned some $30,000 a year from 1991 until 1995, when she moved to Illinois.
Mr. Frey likens Ms. Mariano to the fictional nanny Mary Poppins and credits her with inspiring a love of learning that enabled his daughter to earn a 4.0 grade-point average at the private high school from which she graduated in June.
