"I came to TeacherCare looking for a nanny. Instead, I found a teacher who taught my son more than his preschool ever could. And best of all Matthew has internalized that love for learning and self-confidence, which I know will serve him for life. I'm so happy that I didn't settle for a nanny or daycare center."
Francesca Milla, Virginia Mom
"Do you know what a teachable moment is? Do you know what to say when your child asks for peas and carrots for breakfast? Do you know the recipe for inside dirt? I didn't know these things about nurturing children until I met our TeacherCaregiver, Leslie Poland.
Leslie has been taking care of our two sons, ages 3 and 9 months, since just a few months after we arrived in Washington, DC, in May. Leslie is a former teacher and administrator at a prestigious local daycare center who got tired of dealing with the bureaucracy and simply wanted to spend more time taking care of and teaching kids. Often I wonder who is learning more from Leslie, my sons or I!
My oldest son used to stomp on sand castles at the playground. My way of dealing with this behavior was to remove him from the area any time I spotted a sand castle being built, thus avoiding the potential for disaster. When Leslie took the boys to the park, she reacted much differently. After my son stomped a sand castle, she explained why this wasn't a nice thing to do. I've done that a number of times too, without much effect. However, Leslie then turned to the boy building the sand castle and asked if he would invite my son to make a new one. Leslie called this a "teachable moment"-using a negative incident to spark positive change. After hearing this story, it dawned on me that both my son and I experienced the teachable moment.
There are too many things that we love about Leslie to list here. We often say she's the best thing about our move to Washington, DC. Every day when I walk out the door, I feel a sense of relief knowing that she's with the boys, tending to their needs and helping them experience the world with a fresh set of eyes."
Mark Miano, DC Dad
"I think TeacherCare's philosophy is a wonderful approach ... for one of the most important jobs in the world. We are so very lucky to have our TeacherCaregiver in our lives and our children's future."
Aparna Kambhampati, MD, DC Mom
