" I provide children with confidence as they learn about the world. Each child's strengths and natural abilities are windows to their learning. I help children build a strong foundation for future learning. I find out how the child learns (i.e. through auditory, visual, tactical, etc.) and then shape instruction through a combination of these elements. When I work one-on-one with a child and with a parent's support, the young child developes a broader perspective on life and learning than he or she might in a group setting. Together, the benefits are exponential.
After preschool, I provide Meredith(4) with playful learning and creative activities, reading and dramatized stories, and taking woalks through the city. I teach Meredith many social skills, like how to respond to others (primarily her younger brother) in difficult situations. Currently, I am in the process of putting together a butterfly themed unit. Meredith really loves butterflies, and is interested in the change that the caterpillars experience. Teaching is also a learning process for me, as I realized by working so closely with Meredith that she has an especially unique way of learning that is very different from the way that I learned as a child. My work with Meredith is a constant challenge for me to find ways to think outside my own box. Being a TeacherCaregiver gives me the time I need to develop a teaching style that works for both me and Meredith." |
